CHAPTER SIX

“What is it Markus? What’s wrong?”

“It’s the cash flow.” Markus said, frowning. “There just isn’t any. After paying Beelines for the week, we are down to sixty bucks. I’m willing to try this for a couple weeks and not go back to the clan, but we need to find jobs soon or we won’t have any choice!” Markus pulled out the newspaper that had been left at our door, at the other hotel we’d stayed at.

As he opened it, he picked up a pen stamped with the words ‘Beelines Motel’ off the kitchen counter. “Let’s see what kind of jobs they have here in Frederick.”

Job pickings were slim in the paid classified section of the paper. We read each posting carefully and Markus circled the ones we thought might be good options. But as we discussed the possibilities, we realized that this was going to be even harder than we thought. With no phone, how could they even contact us if we got hired, and with no car, what were we supposed to do—change into our wolf if the job was far away, and then change back again right before we got there? It all seemed so ridiculous.

“I think we may just have to walk around the area and see if anyone is hiring. We are going to have to find someone that will hire us and is willing to pay cash. We have no phone, no car, no tax information, no bank accounts…” I continued ticking off all the problems we faced when it came to getting a job, the tension rising in my voice.

“Well, let’s start walking the streets. You never know what might come up. Heck, they may be hiring super models right down the road and that would be perfect for you,” Markus added, grinning.

Just like Markus to lighten the mood. One of the many things I loved about Markus was his positive can-do attitude. And hey, also the fact that he thought I could be a super model. This man was special!

We locked the door to our unit, number 23, and started walking towards the downtown area. As we ambled up and down the streets, we took turns ducking our heads in the door of the local businesses, asking for the manager to see if they were hiring. We were determined to go back to Beelines Motel with jobs today, but things were getting discouraging. In some places, the manager wasn’t there and the workers had no clue if they were hiring. Others told us to fill out an application, which was a waste of time since we had no phone for them to call us in for an interview. We had probably walked the streets for close to two hours before Markus said we should take a break.

We ducked into a nearby coffee shop, ordered an iced coffee and split a ready-made chicken salad sandwich from the food case. It was hard to spend the money on it but we were both hungry and needed the food to keep our energy up.
